The Best Free Tools for Startup Founders in 2026
When I started building, I spent $0 on tools for the first four months. Everything on this list is free or has a free tier generous enough for a pre-seed startup. Stop paying for things you do not need yet.
This is not a roundup of 50 tools you will never use. It is the actual stack that works when you have zero budget and need to move fast.
The Stack
Kartib
Startup dashboard with runway, KPIs, investor pipeline, OKRs, team, and financials in one place. Yes, this is our product. We built it because we needed it.
Slack
Channels for team, investors, advisors. The free tier keeps 90 days of message history. At pre-seed, that is more than enough.
Notion
Great for wikis, meeting notes, and specs. Use it for documentation. Do not use it to run your company. That way lies madness and broken formulas.
GitHub
Unlimited private repos. Actions CI/CD free tier is generous. There is no reason to pay for code hosting at this stage.
Figma
Design, prototype, hand off to devs. The free tier is enough for a pre-seed startup. You do not need the team plan until you have a team.
PostHog
Product analytics, session recording, feature flags. Skip Google Analytics. It is overkill and your users deserve better privacy.
Vercel
Deploy Next.js and React apps in minutes. The free tier handles surprising amounts of traffic. Upgrade when you actually need to.
Mercury
Startup bank account with no fees. Integrates with everything. The dashboard is actually pleasant to use, which is rare for a bank.
Clerky
Standard YC SAFE documents, ready to download. No lawyer needed for a simple pre-seed SAFE. Save the legal budget for when you actually need it.
Stripe
No monthly fee. The standard for a reason. Documentation is excellent. Takes 30 minutes to integrate.
Zoho Mail
Custom domain email for free. You do not need Google Workspace at $7 per user per month when you have two people.
What NOT to Pay for Yet
A CRM. Use Kartib's investor pipeline or a simple spreadsheet. Salesforce at $75 per user per month is absurd when you have 12 customers.
Marketing automation. You do not have enough users to automate anything. Send emails manually. It takes five minutes.
Project management software with per-seat pricing. A Notion board or GitHub Projects handles this until you have 10+ people.
HR software. You have three people. You do not need BambooHR.
A fancy office. Work from home or a coworking space. Rent is the fastest way to burn through your runway.
The Honest Truth About Tools
Tools do not matter nearly as much as founders think they do. The companies that fail are not failing because they used the wrong project management tool or picked Slack over Discord.
Pick the free version. Use it until it breaks. Then upgrade. The time you spend researching and comparing tools is time you are not spending talking to customers or writing code. And at pre-seed, those are the only two things that matter.
Track the metrics that matter. Build the product. Talk to users. Everything else is a distraction dressed up as productivity.
